Calgary Chinatown

Chinese heritage on the banks of the Bow River, shaped by resilience and woven into the heart of a modern prairie city.

OVERVIEW

Calgary’s Chinese community began taking root in the 1880s, as Chinese railway workers, merchants and families established new lives in a rapidly growing prairie city. Chinatown was displaced twice before community leaders secured land near Centre Street in 1910, laying the foundation for the neighbourhood that exists today.

Located between the Bow River and Calgary’s downtown core, Chinatown brings together family associations, community services, restaurants, shops, housing and cultural spaces. Its landmark Chinese Cultural Centre—with a ceremonial hall inspired by Beijing’s Temple of Heaven—gives the district a distinctive architectural and cultural presence within the city.

Today, Calgary Chinatown stands in striking contrast to the modern towers surrounding it. It remains a place where Chinese Calgarians gather, maintain community connections and share their heritage, while new planning, cultural programming and local investment continue to shape the neighbourhood’s future.
