Montreal Chinatown

A historic Chinese quarter shaped by generations of migration, framed by ceremonial gateways and rooted in the cultural life of French-speaking Montréal.

OVERVIEW

Montréal’s Chinatown has developed within the cultural and linguistic landscape of one of North America’s great French-speaking cities. Located between the downtown core and Old Montréal, the neighbourhood is marked by four ceremonial gateways that give it a distinct and recognizable presence in the city.

For generations, the district has provided Chinese Montrealers with a place to build businesses, establish community institutions and maintain cultural and family connections. Its restaurants, shops, associations, places of worship and public art reflect a community shaped by migration, adaptation and life in a multilingual city.

Today, Montréal’s Chinatown remains both a historic cultural district and an active urban neighbourhood. Longstanding organizations and family businesses operate alongside newer enterprises, while community members continue working to protect its heritage, strengthen local commerce and ensure that Chinatown retains a meaningful place in Montréal’s future.
