Edmonton Chinatown

Stretching across two connected districts along 97 Street, Edmonton’s Chinatown reflects generations of Chinese migration, enterprise and community life.

OVERVIEW

Edmonton’s first Chinatown emerged more than a century ago near Jasper Avenue and 97 Street, where Chinese merchants established businesses, community networks and a foothold in the growing city.

Downtown redevelopment in the 1980s reshaped the district. Cultural institutions and community organizations became concentrated around 102 Avenue, while another commercial area developed farther north along 97 Street. Chinese businesses, restaurants and services helped give this northern district its distinctly multicultural character.

Today, the two areas remain connected through community institutions, family associations, seniors’ residences, cultural landmarks and long-established businesses. Rather than a single compact enclave, Edmonton’s Chinatown forms a cultural corridor shaped by migration, displacement and continued renewal.
